‘Ashwin among great bowlers’ – Veteran Australian captain said on Indian star, told these 5 best
Ashwin holds the record for the fastest 300 wickets in Test cricket while being the fastest Indian bowler to take 400 Test wickets.
Indian cricket team’s legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is counted among the best bowlers of today’s era. His record and match-winning ability, not only place him among the top bowlers in the current bowler’s category but also cement his claim to be among the greatest bowlers of all time. However, questions are often raised about his performance abroad and this is the reason why former Indian cricketer and current commentator Sanjay Manjrekar does not place him in the list of greatest bowlers, but Manjrekar’s argument is cut by former legendary Australian captain Ian Chappell has given. According to Chappell, Ashwin should be counted among the greatest bowlers.
India’s star spinner Ashwin, who took the fastest 300 wickets in Test cricket, has shown his flair in the last decade. He has no match, especially on Indian pitches. However, Ravindra Jadeja, who has emerged as his partner, has also shown his strength in the last few years and has started taking wickets as fast as Ashwin.
Sanjay Manjrekar Made This Argument
Based on these, Sanjay Manjrekar avoids keeping Ashwin on the list of great bowlers. Manjrekar spoke during the discussion on this issue in ESPN-Cricinfo’s show ‘Run Order’. Former Indian cricketer said,
“When people call him the greatest bowler of all time, I have a problem. The problem with Ashwin is that he has not taken five wickets even once in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). When you look at his stellar performances on Indian pitches, Jadeja has taken almost equal to him in the last four years. Axar Patel has taken more wickets than him in the last series against England.”
Ian Chappell Gives His Reply
However, the legendary Australian captain Chappell did not seem to agree with this argument. He cited the example of the great West Indies fast bowler Joel Garner and said that his number of wickets is less because he had many other great bowlers on the team. Chappell said,
“If you look at Garner’s performance, he probably hasn’t taken five wickets too often. When you look at his record, he might not look that impressive. This is because there were three more brilliant bowlers in that team. I think the last few years Indian bowling has been fantastic, so bowlers have to share wickets.”
These 5 Bowlers Are The Best
Chappell also named Indian pace duo Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami along with Ashwin in the five best Test bowlers of all time. He placed Pat Cummins of Australia at the top of the list as well as Kagiso Rabada of South Africa.
